Tips for Booking Hotels in Major Indian Cities
In This Article
Booking a hotel sounds simple. Pick a city, choose a date, find a room and book it.
Until you actually start looking.
Then you realise the cheaper hotel is nowhere near where you need to go, the nice-looking one has mixed reviews, and the price you saw first isn't quite the price you pay at checkout.
We've made enough hotel bookings to know that the cheapest room isn't always the best deal. Sometimes paying a little more saves you a lot of time, especially in a big city.
So, if you're planning a stay in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, or another major Indian city, these are a few things we'd keep in mind.
First, Look at Where the Hotel Is
This sounds obvious, but it's probably the easiest thing to overlook.
You find a nice room at a good price and book it. Then you realise you're spending an hour getting to the places you actually wanted to visit.
Mumbai is a good example. A hotel near the airport, Bandra, or South Mumbai can give you three very different experiences. In Delhi too, being close to a metro station can be much more useful than simply being close to the city center.
So before looking for cheap hotels, have a rough idea of your plans. If you're going to meetings all over the city, stay somewhere that makes that easier. If you're sightseeing, look at what's around the hotel and how you'll get there.
A ₹500 cheaper room isn't much of a saving if you're spending ₹500 more every day on cabs.
Don't Go by the First Price You See
The room rate you see while browsing isn't always what you'll finally pay.
When you're looking at hotels online, check the final amount and see what's included. Breakfast, taxes, parking, and other charges can change the total.
We'd also take a minute to look at the cancellation policy. If your plans aren't fixed, paying slightly more for a room you can cancel can save you from losing the whole booking later.
And then there are reviews.
Don't just look at the rating. Read a few recent ones. If people keep mentioning the same problems noisy rooms, poor cleanliness, difficult check-in we'd take that seriously.
Photos show you what the hotel wants you to see. Reviews often tell you what the stay is actually like.
The "Best" Hotel Depends on Why You're Travelling
A hotel that works perfectly for a business trip might be completely wrong for a family holiday.
If you're travelling for work, you probably care more about Wi-Fi, breakfast, transport and being close to your office than a fancy pool.
With family, room size, parking, breakfast and easy access can matter much more.
And if it's a weekend where you plan to spend half your time at the hotel, that's when a boutique hotel or luxury hotel can be worth the extra spend.
Basically, don't book a hotel just because it has a great rating. Think about what you're actually going to use.
When Should You Book?
There's no magic rule that says you have to book exactly 30 or 60 days before your trip.
But if you're travelling during a long weekend, festival, holiday, or a big event, we'd start looking earlier.
Popular hotels can fill up quickly, and waiting until the last few days usually means fewer choices.
If you find a good hotel deal early and the booking has free cancellation, that's even better. You have the room secured without completely locking yourself in.
Our Quick Check Before We Hit "Book"
Before confirming a hotel reservation, we'd quickly look at:
- Location: Does it actually work for your plans?
- Final price: What are you paying after taxes and other charges?
- Reviews: What are recent guests saying?
- Room: Does the room you've selected match what you need?
- Cancellation: What happens if your plans change?
- Basics: Wi-Fi, breakfast, parking, air conditioning — whatever matters for your trip.
That's about it. You don't need a 20-point checklist.
Booking Hotels Online? Keep It Simple
We wouldn't open 15 tabs and try to remember which hotel had breakfast and which one had free cancellation.
Start with your destination and dates. Shortlist a few hotels that look right for your plans. Then compare the hotel prices, room types, reviews, and cancellation policies.
If you're looking for budget hotels in Mumbai, a family stay in Delhi, a business hotel in Bengaluru, or a luxury stay in Jaipur, the same rule applies:
Don't just look for the cheapest room. Look for the room that makes sense for your trip.
And if you can get a good price on top of that, even better.
